New MoDOT Freight Enhancement Program could lower grocery store prices

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Missouri Department of Transportation is starting a Freight Enhancement Program (FRE) this summer.

The FRE funding is for transportation methods. The funding must be used toward building or buying and not for operation purposes.

Public, private, and non-for-profit entities are invited to send in applications to request funding for non-highway improvement projects.

“So, the benefits for the state are any time we can have more efficient freight movement by any mode that decreases the price that we as consumers see from our farming standpoint,” says Cheryl Ball, Freight and Waterways Administrator for the Missouri Department of Transportation. “The lower we can make the price the more profit the farmers do which means they reinvest into Missouri’s economy.”

The applications for the FRE program will begin on July 1, 2022 and end on June 30, 2023.
