CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)- A new update for Apple iPhone users, has new features and new ways of communicating.

Cape Girardeau Police Department, Officer Bobby Newton, has safety tips for parents and how to disabled the new feature, called ‘Namedrop’.

He says, “In order for someone to get your information or the information from your phone, your phone has to be unlocked, and there’s a downloading process to that.”

The new feature will default to ‘on’ after the newest iOS 17 updates.

The update can be switched off through your settings in your iPhone.

“You can go ahead and turn it off which we highly recommend you do.” Says, Newton.

Information can only be dropped if another iPhone is directly on top of your phone through ‘air drop’

Roger Brown is the Owner and Operator at STS Repair, he says the new update shouldn’t be too concerning, “As far as the sharing goes, you do have to approve it on both ends of it. So, it’s not like something you’re just going to walk by somebody and it’s got all your information and all your pictures and stuff and you have to approve it.”

Brown says that he feels Apple does a good job when it comes to advanced security, “With this feature I’m sure it is scary, I’ve got a lot of confidence in Apple as far as keeping us safe, and keeping your information safe, it’s not something I would really be concerned about.”
