CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The Cape Girardeau Police Department is reminding residents of a new Missouri law designed to protect first responders that took effect Aug. 28.

Senate Bill 669 establishes the offense of interference with a first responder under Missouri Revised Statute Section 574.207. The statute makes it a crime to knowingly approach within 25 feet of a police officer, firefighter, or emergency medical worker performing their lawful duties after receiving a clear verbal warning not to approach, if the intent is to:

Impede or interfere with the responder’s ability to perform duties;

Threaten the responder with physical harm; or

Engage in conduct meant to intentionally cause emotional distress without legitimate purpose.

Violations are classified as a Class A misdemeanor.

“This new law provides important protections for first responders so they can perform their duties safely and effectively,” Cape Girardeau Police Chief Wes Glueck said. “At the same time, the Cape Girardeau Police Department remains committed to enforcing the law with fairness, transparency, and respect for the freedoms guaranteed to our community.”

The department encouraged residents to familiarize themselves with the change in law. Anyone with questions or information can contact the Cape Girardeau Police Department at 573-335-6621, submit an anonymous tip at 573-339-6313, or text “CAPEPD” to 847411.
