New restaurant, coffee shop to open in downtown Carterville

CARTERVILLE, Ill., (KBSI) — A new restaurant and coffee shop, Sulla’s Café & Taverna, is set to open in downtown Carterville at 131 S. Division St., the former site of Montgomery’s Place.

Owner Sulla Gatses, a Southern Illinois University-Carbondale graduate, plans to offer breakfast, lunch and dinner options, along with a coffee shop, bar and pizza menu.

Gatses said she was drawn to the location, a historic building renovated by Jennifer Spence, owner of the 131 Building and J. Spence Properties. The building, dating back to 1894, recently won the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award.

An official opening date has not been announced but is expected between August and September. Those interested in applying for a position can email sullascafetaverna@gmail.com or call 931-449-0272.
