New Years Eve ranked biggest night of the year for DUI’s

Fentanyl Scott City

SCOTT CITY, Mo. (KBSI) – If your planning on ringing in the new year with a drink or other festivities, you may want to have a plan in place.

According to studies done by the CDC New Years eve is ranked the number one biggest night for DUI’s in the United States.

Statistically the chances of getting a DUI is 129% higher on New Year’s Eve. Brookes Brockmire is a Patrol Seargent for Scott City Police Department, and he says citizens should have a plan before leaving the house.

“The biggest thing we want to stress is sober drivers.” Says Brockmire.

Planning ahead with a designated driver, utilizing a rideshare service like public transit, Uber or Lyft are all options on New Year’s Eve. Brockmire says if you get in a spot where you have no other options but to drink or drive, they are here to help.

“If it’s all the way down to “I’m going to drive intoxicated, or I need to get somewhere sober” you can also contact law enforcement we would rather see you get to your destination safe then take a risk.”

“Weve got lots of good applications out there like life 360, definitely notify your friends and family of your travel plans or plans to go out. Set an expectation of when your going to leave, where you’re going to be and when your expected to return.”

Using the buddy system by having someone with you, and not leaving your drink unattended are also ways to have a safer holiday.

The Scott City Police Department says citizens should know it’s illegal to discharge firearms or fireworks of any kind on New Years.
