Officer training goes hands-on through Jiu-Jitsu tactical training course

JACKSON, Mo. (KBSI) – Local officers are sharpening the skills they hope they never have to use as area police departments sent officers to a weeklong, hands-on defense tactic training course.

Cape Girardeau Public Information’s Officer Bobby Newton shares that men and women from across the area came together in Jackson Missouri for hand-son training focusing on control techniques through jiu-jitsu and safety response in high pressure situations.

The training was held by multiple instructors, one of those instructors being Owner, Professor and Head Instructor, of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu   Brian Imholz. He shares that the training given is tailored to law enforcement tactics.

“So, this is a course specifically for law enforcement” says Imholz. “So, Jiu Jitsu has all sorts of aspects to it and control is the biggest thing that we do. So anytime an officer goes hands on with any control with the suspect not only keeping themselves but also trying to keep the suspect as safe as possible. So, Jiu Jitsu is the perfect avenue for that.”

Officer Newton shares that it is vital for officers to stay up to date on training and that the goal is simple- to protect both officers and the public by relying on proper training techniques.

“So, this will be absolutely incredible to have trainers and instructors within our department to teach others and also with the community, it protects the entire community because the better prepared our officers are, the better trained they are, the better they can serve the public as well” says Newton.

The training was a 4-day course held for 5 hours each day resulting in 20 training hours at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Jackson, Missouri.
