Officials review mountain lion reports near Perryville

PERRYVILLE, Mo., (KBSI) — State conservation officials are reviewing drone footage after reports of mountain lions in the Perryville area earlier this week.

In a statement Tuesday, Missouri Department of Conservation Lt. Chris Doran said experts do not believe the animals captured on thermal drone video were mountain lions, but more likely foxes or coyotes. He said the department would review the footage further and release its own statement.

The clarification comes after city officials initially reported that at least two mountain lions had been confirmed in the area between Legion Lake and Interstate 55. That report cited video recorded in the early hours of Sept. 15, as well as a sighting the previous Friday just south of the Perryville exit.

Conservation officials noted that male mountain lions can have a range of up to 500 square miles, while females typically roam about 300 square miles, making it unlikely the animals would remain in one location for long.

Authorities urged residents and trail users near Legion Lake to remain alert. They also provided guidance on how to respond if encountering a mountain lion:

Do not run, crouch, or turn your back.

Make yourself look larger by standing tall, raising your arms, or spreading out clothing.

Keep eye contact and back away slowly.

Speak loudly and firmly.

Throw sticks or rocks if necessary to scare the animal away.

If attacked, fight back aggressively, aiming for the face and eyes.

Residents are encouraged to report sightings to local law enforcement or the Missouri Department of Conservation.
