One City hosts 3rd annual Christmas at the City
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – “We’re excited to have everybody here together as a family,” said Christina Cheek with One City.
One City held its annual fundraiser Saturday night called Christmas at the City.
One City is an organization with the mission to create space and opportunities to unite the city through resources, relationships, and community development
“It’s been fun to see it grow into something that’s a little unique in the area,” Cheek said. “There’s not a lot of fully decorated Christmas trees that get auctioned off, so that’s fun.”
This year’s event will feature 15 unique Christmas trees decorated by local citizens and businesses.
Cheek said those who decorate the trees have free reign over what their tree will look like, and one thing continues to amaze her.
“They get to choose their theme or their décor that they want to do, and I find it pretty amazing that no one ends up picking the same thing, which I think is super cool,” she said.
There will also be a silent auction, dinner, and live music.
Volunteer Alexis Schmidt, who has never been to Christmas at the City, shared what she is most looking forward to on Saturday.
“I’m excited to see how the live auction of the trees goes and just seeing everybody in all the different outfits and everything like that,” she said.
And above all else, Christmas at the City raises money to help support One City’s various programs and allow the organization to continue its mission of bridging gaps in the community and uniting the city through resources, relationships, and community development.
Cheek described the most rewarding aspect of her position as Work Life Coordinator.
“The main part of what I do at Work Life, that we get to help them do is just give them a new perspective, give them some self-confidence,” she said. “That’s my favorite part is seeing people grow in confidence and who they are and helping them see their value that’s already there.”
