Paducah Police launch free gun lock program to promote firearm safety

PADUCAH, Ky. (KBSI) — The Paducah Police Department is launching a new Gun Lock Safety Program aimed at promoting responsible firearm storage and preventing accidental injuries in the community.

Through a partnership with Project ChildSafe and the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the department is providing free gun locks and firearm safety materials to the public. Officials say the program is designed to make safe storage more accessible and help reduce the risk of accidental and youth-related firearm injuries.

Gun owners can pick up a free gun lock at the Paducah Police Department lobby during normal business hours. No paperwork or personal information is required.

Police say properly storing firearms — including keeping guns locked and storing ammunition separately — can help prevent nearly one-third of accidental and youth-related firearm deaths. However, studies show fewer than half of gun owners consistently lock their firearms, highlighting the need for programs like this.

Officer Blake Quinn said the initiative is about both education and prevention.

“I think it’s important sometimes for the public to understand that not only do we enforce the law, but we’re here to educate,” Quinn said. “So if we can provide these gun locks and safety guidance, it shows our commitment to keeping the community and family safe.”

The program launched during National Public Health Week and is part of the department’s broader effort to promote community safety and responsible gun ownership.

As part of its outreach, the department will also distribute gun locks and provide safety information at the Paducah Farmers Market on May 9. Officials say additional opportunities to receive gun locks and materials will be offered at community events throughout the year.
