WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — A parolee was arrested after deputies recovered methamphetamine during a late-night encounter in Herrin, authorities said.
Deputies with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office observed two people riding bicycles near the intersection of Stotlar Street and North 20th Street at about 11:01 p.m. Dec. 25, 2025. Deputies made contact with the individuals and identified the man as Samuel J. Garten.
Authorities said Garten was confirmed to be on Mandatory Supervised Release through the Illinois Department of Corrections. A search of Garten’s person resulted in the discovery of a clear plastic bag containing a crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Garten was taken into custody without incident.
The woman accompanying Garten consented to a search of her person and belongings, which did not reveal any contraband. She was released at the scene.
Garten was cited for possession of methamphetamine, a Class 3 felony, and was transported to and lodged in the Williamson County Jail. Officials said the Illinois Department of Corrections also issued a warrant revoking Garten’s parole status.
