Pedestrian killed in crash on business HWY 13 near Murphysboro

MURPHYSBORO, Ill., (KBSI) — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Tuesday evening on Business Highway 13 near West Industrial Park Road in rural Murphysboro.
At approximately 7:03 p.m. on Nov. 4, deputies responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.
According to a preliminary investigation, a black 2019 Toyota Tundra driven by Robert Privett was traveling south on Business Highway 13, approaching the Union Pacific Railroad underpass, when it struck a pedestrian walking north in the southbound lane. The pedestrian was later identified as Jennifer Perez.
Authorities said Privett attempted to take evasive action but was unable to avoid the collision. An off-duty Jackson County deputy was first on scene and, along with a passing motorist, rendered aid until emergency crews arrived.
Perez was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
The crash remains under investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. The Jackson County Ambulance Service, Jackson County Coroner’s Office, and Murphysboro Police Department assisted at the scene.
The roadway was closed for approximately one hour and 45 minutes.
