Perryville High School Student Council brings in ‘Pirate Pantry’
PERRYVILLE, Mo. (KBSI)- Drew Layton a Senior at Perryville High School and the Student Council President put together a plan to help his fellow classmates.
Kate Martin, the Communications Director at Perry County School District #32 says, “The student council president, Drew Layton came to me a few months ago was looking for additional projects and they wanted to know what area of need there might be for students.”
With the help of the student council, the school was able to put together what they call a ‘pirate pantry’
Katherine Broeking, a Sophomore at Perryville High School adds, “There were a lot more people than I expected, they would just drive in they had all these bins, there was a lot of just all kinds of stuff and it was really great to see.”
Dane Lauck, Senior, Perryville High School says, “So, these are all donations from gracious people within the community.”
Jaelyn Kennedy is a senior at Perryville high school and she says the pantry is now a vital addition to the school, “I feel that kids feel more confident coming to school whenever they are clean and they have access to these types of things. So, these are all the toiletries and cleaning supplies that we kind of organized to help families out. Over here we have your like paper towels and your toilet paper, more of the paper products of what you would need.”
Martin noted that there is definitely a growing need for some students, to put the pantry to use, “And we also have a local population of homeless youth, high school aged students, who are not in a typical, nuclear, who need that extra assistance as well.”
Each of the students say they hope the pirate pantry is something future classes can continue, so they can feel that Perryville pride of implementing something so important for their school.
