CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – A recent scam trying to get money from individuals who have been in a vehicle wreck is now affecting Missourians.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department says they have now received reports of a person calling an individual associated with someone who was involved in a motor vehicle crash, and they identified themselves as the investigating trooper and attempted to solicit money from the victim.

The caller may intimidate the victim with false claims of impending or nonexistent court charges/proceedings or arrest.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says they will NEVER have a state trooper call anyone asking for money after a vehicle crash.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department says they will never do this either.

Both Departments encourage you to hang up the phone if you receive a call like this and never give them, you’re personal information or money.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department advises that you be aware of these scams, protect yourself and always verify who you are talking with. If you suspect, it may be a scam call our main line to confirm if who you are talking to is a scammer or a real officer.
