Police continue investigation into fatal Cape Girardeau assault; victim’s vehicle located

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Detectives with the Cape Girardeau Police Department continue to investigate a fatal assault reported in November 2025. No arrests have been made.
Update, Jan. 15, 2026 (12 p.m.):
Investigators were notified Jan. 9 that the victim’s vehicle, a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, had been located in the St. Louis area. Detectives responded to process the vehicle for evidence and interviewed the individual in possession of it. The investigation remains ongoing.

Update, Nov. 4, 2025 (9:30 a.m.):
The Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad disbanded following an extensive investigation. The case will continue to be handled by the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
Update, Nov. 3, 2025 (10:30 a.m.):
Investigators identified the victim as Dianna Dowdy, 55, of Cape Girardeau. Authorities requested assistance locating her vehicle, described as a dark blue 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe with a white “First Auto Credit” sticker on the left rear hatch. The vehicle was last seen about 1:10 a.m. Nov. 1 traveling north on Frederick Street and crossing Broadway. Residents and businesses with exterior cameras in the area were asked to review footage.

At approximately 1:55 a.m. Nov. 1, 2025, officers responded to the 600 block of Morgan Oak Street for a report of an assault. Officers located a female victim who later died from her injuries. The Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad was activated. No arrests have been made.
