Police Identify Suspect After Deadly Cape Girardeau Shooting
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — One person is dead and another injured following a Friday afternoon shooting in Cape Girardeau, activating the Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad.
Just before 1 p.m. on May 9, Cape Girardeau police were dispatched to the 1500 block of Whitener Street after reports of shots fired and a person shot. Officers arrived to find a victim with a gunshot wound to the leg. The injury was described as non-life-threatening, and the individual was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
While officers were responding to the scene, a nearby hospital contacted the Cape police to report a second gunshot victim had arrived in the emergency room. That individual, identified as 22-year-old Micah Ledbetter of Cape Girardeau, later died from her injuries.
Cape Girardeau Police Chief Adam Glueck said the severity of the situation led to the activation of the Major Case Squad, a multi-agency team of officers from Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties, the Jackson Police Department, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
“This is a group of highly trained investigators that spend a lot of time digging into the case,” said police public information officer Bobby Newton. “Hopefully we can get this solved quickly.”
Police used various tools in the investigation, including drone technology provided by the Law Enforcement Academy, to search the area for evidence.
By Friday evening, authorities identified the suspect as Deandra Leeann Patterson, 27, of Cape Girardeau. Patterson has been charged by the Cape Girardeau County Prosecutor’s Office with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Patterson is being held on a $1 million cash-only bond.
