Police release identity of victim in Metropolis murder

METROPOLIS, Ill. (KBSI) – Metropolis police have identified the victim of a murder at a Metropolis, Ill. truck stop on May 2.

The victim has been identified as Samuel S. Stalions, 41, of Golconda.

Jonathon J. Riley, 36, of Kirksey, Ky. was arrested and charged with 1st degree murder, according to the Metropolis Police Depatment.

Metropolis police were dispatched to a fight in progress at Acee’s Truck Stop located at 105 E. 5th Street around 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2.

Officers found the victim laying on the floor in the gaming room. Video surveillance shows that the victim had been pepper sprayed seconds before they began fighting, according to the police department.

Police say the video also shows that after the victim was knocked to the ground, Riley choked and then put his knee on the victim’s neck and used the weight of his body to put additional pressure on the victim’s neck until he became unconscious.

Metropolis police officers initiated first aid measures. Stalions was taken to Massac Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 11:30 p.m.

Riley was taken to the Massac County Detention Center.
