Police warn of phone scam: Don’t fall victim to fake warrant calls

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The Cape Girardeau Police Department is alerting residents to a phone scam in which callers claim to be law enforcement officers.

The scammers advise individuals that they have outstanding warrants and demand payment. The police department emphasizes that officers will never inform individuals of warrants or request payment over the phone.

Additionally, the department does not accept bitcoin as payment.

To verify the authenticity of a caller, residents are advised to hang up and contact the police department directly using the main line: 573-335-6621.
