POPLAR BLUFF, Mo., (KBSI) — The Poplar Bluff City Council voted Monday night to approve an agreement allowing the Poplar Bluff Police Department to participate in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s 287(g) program.

Police Chief JR Keirsey previously said participation in the program is required for the department to apply for federal grant funding.

According to Keirsey, the potential federal funding could be used to purchase new Tasers, two drones and additional Axon technology.

The 287(g) program allows ICE to enter into agreements with state and local law enforcement agencies to perform certain immigration enforcement functions under ICE oversight.

More information about the agreement and the Poplar Bluff Police Department’s participation in the program is expected to be released.
