SHAWNEETOWN, Ill., (KBSI) – Gov. J.B. Pritzker joined local leaders Thursday to announce a $14 million investment to upgrade and revitalize the Shawneetown Port, a project officials say will strengthen regional infrastructure and create new economic opportunities in southern Illinois.
The funding will support significant improvements to the port’s facilities and operations, including modernization of docks, storage areas and transportation access. State and local officials emphasized that the upgrades are designed to enhance the port’s capacity to handle commerce along the Ohio River, bolstering its role as a vital hub for trade and industry in Gallatin County.
“The Shawneetown Port has long been an important economic driver for southern Illinois, but it is time to bring these facilities into the 21st century,” Pritzker said. “This investment will not only ensure the port can continue to serve businesses and communities in this region but also open the door to new opportunities for growth and development.”
Local leaders echoed the governor’s remarks, noting that the revitalization project is expected to support jobs both during construction and through expanded commercial activity once the upgrades are complete. They also highlighted the port’s importance to agriculture, shipping and manufacturing sectors across southern Illinois.
“This project is about more than just infrastructure,” one local official said. “It’s about securing the future of our communities by investing in resources that will keep commerce moving and help our economy thrive.”
The Shawneetown Port, located on the Ohio River, has historically played a role in regional shipping and logistics. Officials said the revitalization effort reflects a renewed commitment to supporting rural infrastructure and ensuring Illinois remains competitive in river-based commerce.
