Proposed improvements to I-57/64 interchange in Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (KBSI) – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) held a public meeting earlier Tuesday for proposed improvements to the I-57/64 interchange in Mount Vernon.

IDOT presented multiple displays, videos and conversations about the topic.

According to Carrie Nelsen, Program Development Engineer for IDOT, the bridge is more than 50 years old and needs improvement.

The current design of the bridge is in a diamond style layout. Although, the plans offer a new interchange in the shape of a diverging diamond.

Nelson claims that this remodel will decrease traffic and increase safety for all patrons.

If the proposed plan gets approved, the construction will begin in 2025 and is projected to be finished by 2027.
