CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The fifth annual Mary Mingle 5K drew a record-setting crowd Saturday morning in downtown Cape Girardeau, with 527 participants—the largest number of registered runners in the event’s history.

The race began outside Houck Stadium and followed a downtown route that finished at the Courthouse steps on Spanish Street. Spanish Street was closed from Broadway to Independence during the event to accommodate runners and spectators.

Participants were encouraged to pick up packets Friday afternoon at Missouri Running Company, with limited pickup offered early Saturday inside Mary Jane Bourbon & Smokehouse.

Hosted by the Community Counseling Center Foundation, the professionally timed race—managed by Red Runner Racing—featured age-division awards for the top three male and female finishers in seven categories: 0–19, 20–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, 60–69 and 70-plus. A festive “Candy Cane Lane” finish zone welcomed runners with food, sponsor booths and prize giveaways.

Proceeds from the event support the Community Counseling Center Foundation and its services for individuals living with mental illness across a five-county region. Executive Director Michelle Ramsey said the strong turnout will significantly bolster the foundation’s mission.

“Every registration directly supports our 160-plus residential clients by helping fund Christmas gifts and essential services,” Ramsey said. “Last year’s event raised more than $20,000, and with this record participation, we are confident the 2025 race will exceed that total.”

Race Director Brandy McIntire credited the event’s continued growth to community engagement.

“This event simply wouldn’t be possible without the runners, walkers, volunteers and generous business sponsors who show up each year,” McIntire said. “Whether participants run or walk, they are making a direct impact on mental health services in our community.”
