American Red Cross hosts virtual volunteer fair

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The American Red Cross hosted a virtual volunteer opportunity for disaster relief.

The company is a non-for-profit company where the volunteers and staff work to deliver crucial services to anyone who is in need.

“The volunteer fair we had today (Thursday), that was the second fair that we’ve done on a national basis where we invited anyone and everyone that was interested in learning more about volunteering and they could talk with people like myself from around the country about their interests,” said Kristin Pendleton with the American Red Cross.

Attendees were shown different types of services that the Red Cross provides. Services included disaster relief, lifesaving blood, training and certification, international services, and military families.

“Red Cross, we are there to take care of the people after a severe weather event may have occurred here in our region of Missouri and Arkansas,” Pendleton said. “We certainly had our share of severe weather with tornadoes and flooding. And so, when the Red Cross responds to those kinds of events again were there to take care of the people were there to give them comfort were there to give them resources and we are there to give them hope.”

Pendleton says volunteering can be rewarding not only for the person help, but for the volunteer as well.

“For anyone that has any interest at all, I highly encourage you to find out more so that you can be like our volunteers currently that know about the rewarding experience it could be to be the light in someone’s day,” she said. “When you’re having likely the worst day of their lives and you get to be the light for them on that day it’s an extremely rewarding experience.”
