Red Cross provides shelter and disaster kits as flooding affects Northern Tennessee

OBION Tn. (KBSI) – The American Red Cross in Northern Tennessee is primarily focused on providing shelter and food as many residents deal with flood damage to their homes.

Red Cross teams are working around the clock, setting up shelters at the Woodland Mills Civic Center. The center is offering a safe space for people to stay overnight or stop by for food and water.

Sarah Breazeale, Executive Director of the American Red Cross in the Midsouth, says the organization is also preparing disaster cleanup kits to assist residents as they begin the recovery process.

“We want to make sure people are safe and warm, especially with frigid temperatures and snow expected in the next day or two,” Breazeale said. “Right now, it’s about safety. There’s nothing that can be done for the property at this moment, so we’re in a ‘wait and see’ phase.”

The disaster kits will include tarps, shovels, and other items to help with flood cleanup. The Red Cross is working to distribute 100 of these kits to residents in Obion who need them.
