Residents begin cleanup after deadly storm strikes Scott County, Missouri

Deadly Storm Strikes Scott County

SCOTT COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) — Residents in Scott County, Missouri, are beginning the recovery process after a deadly storm swept through the area Friday night, leaving two people dead and several injured.

The storm carved a path of destruction through areas like Sloanville Rd, where fallen trees, shredded rooftops, and scattered debris now line the roads. Families say they watched helplessly as the tornado approached, throwing debris and even animals across the field.

“It’s hard to explain,” said Katina Beggs, a Scott County resident. “We saw the tornado from our house… there was debris everywhere.”

Beggs, like many others, has spent the day helping clear roads, deliver food and water, and assist neighbors in need. While grateful to be safe, she said the emotional toll of the damage is sinking in for many.

“People are thankful they’re alive, obviously sad,” she said. “But it’s heartbreaking, everyone’s lost so much.”

Scott County Fire Chief Jeremy Perrien said first responders had been monitoring the storm and quickly mobilized after the tornado touched down. He described the devastating scene upon arrival.

“When we first got to the Sloanville area, we could literally hear people screaming in the distance,” Perrien said. “Some areas were hit really hard. It was a bad night for a lot of people, and we’re praying for them.”

He also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of help but asked visitors to be mindful not to block narrow roads or interfere with emergency operations.

“They’re trying to help,” he said. “But when emergency vehicles get delayed 20 minutes because of parked cars.”

While chainsaws and heavy equipment continue to clear the area, Beggs said what the community needs most is support.

“There’s not a whole lot anyone can do right now,” she said. “But prayers and thoughts go a long way.”

Cleanup is expected to continue for weeks as residents and emergency crews work to restore order and power to rebuild in the wake of the storm.
