SOUTHERN Ill., (KBSI)- The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is urging residents to take precautions as the traditional respiratory virus season begins this October.

This includes getting vaccinated against COVID-19, flu, and RSV to protect oneself and one’s family, especially for those who are eligible.

Prevention Measures:

  • – Get vaccinated against COVID-19, flu, and RSV
  • – Stay home when sick to reduce transmission
  • – Wear a well-fitted mask around others if self-isolation isn’t possible
  • – Get tested quickly if symptoms arise

Vaccine Availability: The new COVID-19 and flu vaccines are recommended for everyone over six months old, while the RSV vaccine is recommended for those 75 years and older.

Vaccines are widely available at pharmacies, hospitals, and community health clinics.

Treatment Options: Effective anti-viral treatments are available for COVID-19 and flu but must be started quickly.

Those at higher risk, such as older adults, young children, and pregnant individuals, should consult a healthcare provider for treatment options.

Governor JB Pritzker emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and flu, while IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra encourages monitoring the updated respiratory illness dashboard.
