Review of local stories in 2024
(KBSI) – FOX23 looks back at some of the big local stories of 2024.
In February, a shooting in broad daylight at the CVS in Cape Girardeau took the life of 17-year old Kemari Childress.
Another shooting in Cape Girardeau happened at the Show Me Center during Cape Central High School’s graduation ceremony.
The shooting led to increased safety protocols at Cape Girardeau public schools, including the installation of metal detectors.
In April people witnessed a total solar eclipse at a viewing event in Paducah, Kentucky, and at Cape Central Middle School teachers prepared students for the day with lessons on how the eclipse occurs.
Also this year, former students of ABM Ministries Christian boarding schools spoke out about abuse they say they experienced at the school.
In October, more people associated with ABM Ministries faced charges.
There were big concerns about workplace safety for Illinois Department of Corrections workers, this year. In October, IDOC workers held a rally in Vienna to bring attention to the dangers they face – allegedly being exposed to drugs they believe is coming in through the mail.
While IDOC has turned down requests to scan inmates’ mail and provide it digitally instead – some Illinois county jails are making the switch.
