Riverside Regional Library kicks off summer reading program

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Riverside Regional Library is working with kids to prevent the summer slide.

Children and youth librarian Desert Siedelman says the goal of Riverside Regional’s summer programs is to help children retain their reading skills throughout the summer.

“So, they don’t miss out on maybe slipping back education-wise but we also want to encourage them that no matter how fast or how slow they read it’s still an important surprise,” said Siedelman.

The average student loses 17-34 percent of the prior year’s learning gains according to a study published in American Educational Research Journal
