Rural Health Inc. promotes heart health during American Heart Month

ILLINOIS (KBSI) — While deaths from heart disease have declined in recent decades, the condition remains the leading cause of death in the United States, according to health officials. February is American Heart Month, and Rural Health Inc. is encouraging residents to speak with a health care provider about heart health and preventive care.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women and men and for people across most racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. In 2024, about 683,000 Americans died from heart disease — roughly one in every five deaths nationwide.

Health officials estimate about 805,000 heart attacks occur in the U.S. each year. Coronary artery disease, the most common form of heart disease, is linked to risk factors including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes and physical inactivity. The condition often develops gradually and may not cause symptoms until a major cardiac event occurs. About 5% of adults ages 20 and older — roughly one in 20 — are estimated to have coronary artery disease.

Other contributors to heart disease include obesity, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity and excessive alcohol use.

“Keeping your heart healthy is not a one-size-fits-all process,” said Shawnna Rhine, director of public relations for Rural Health Inc. “That’s why it’s important to talk with a health care professional before starting any diet or exercise program. Together, you can establish a plan that fits your individual health needs.”

Rural Health Inc. is encouraging community members to participate in American Heart Month by wearing red on Feb. 6 to support women’s heart health, learning Hands-Only CPR, scheduling regular screenings for blood pressure and cholesterol, and sharing awareness information.

More information about American Heart Month is available through the American Heart Association. Appointments with Rural Health Inc. can be scheduled by calling 618-833-4471 or visiting ruralhealthinc.org.

Rural Health Inc. is a nonprofit organization serving Johnson, Massac and Union counties in Illinois and is designated as a federally qualified health center, providing health care services to underserved communities.
