Safe Haven Baby Box to be installed at Paducah fire station

PADUCAH, Ky. (KBSI) – The Paducah City Commission voted unanimously in support of installing a Safe Haven Baby Box in Paducah.

The goal is to save babies’ lives.

Kentucky law allows for a parent to leave a newborn with an emergency medical service provider, police officer or firefighter.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes allow parents to remain anonymous. The box is an alternative to tragic instances where parents abandon babies in unsafe conditions.

“Unfortunately we’ve seen the results of what can happen when there’s not an opportunity and we’ve seen that right here in our very area when there’s not something like this available,” said Paducah Fire Chief Steve Kyle. “Even though the fire stations are available. The police station is available. Sometimes that anonymity is just what people need in order to get themselves over the hump to keep them from doing something that’s much more catastrophic.”

The Paducah Baby Box is expected to be installed at one of the Paducah fire stations in 2024.
