Fire Prevention Week safety checklist

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Preparation is key in many cases and especially when it comes to staying safe in disastrous situations.

This week marks fire prevention week and firefighters everywhere, such as Cape Girardeau fire inspector, Drew St. John, are sharing the message that fires won’t wait, so plan your escape so you can always be ready.

“We’re just really encouraging people to go home and plan a way to get out in case of a fire at their house, to come up with ways with your family escape routes [and] meeting places,” said St. John.

Establishing escape routes and meeting places are just a few of the many things you can do to stay ahead of the curve.

“We say this all the time, make sure that you have smoke detectors and that the batteries in them are good. To make sure we change those batteries and test them every year. One of the big things, we want to make sure that again with the smoke detectors, that every bedroom has a smoke detector, every hallway smoke detector on every level of the house . You just want to plan your escape routes getting out of the house that works for you and members of the family,” said St. John.

St. John says that it could be a matter of minutes before you and your family have to get to safety.

Having everyone aware of the safety plan is important and planning for various situations is equally important.

“We want to make sure that people know that it’s not to hang around, not to try to grab your belongings, get your family get out to safety. Call us so we can come to help you and put the fire out,” said St. John.
