ST. LOUIS, Mo., (KBSI) – The zoo announced the death of Rimba, a 28-year-old sun bear, following a decline in his health related to chronic arthritis and dental disease. Officials said Rimba was humanely euthanized earlier this week.
Rimba arrived at the zoo in 2000 through a partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Bear Taxonomic Advisory Group after being rescued from the illegal pet trade in Southeast Asia.
Caretakers described Rimba as an engaging and social bear, known for his enthusiastic morning greetings, nest-building skills and enjoyment of enrichment items such as fire hoses, rotting logs and honey. He was often seen basking in the sun on elevated platforms within his habitat.
In 2022, Rimba was diagnosed with oral cancer. Zoo officials said collaboration between the animal care and animal health teams, along with the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, allowed electrochemotherapy to extend his quality of life for several additional years.
Zoo staff said Rimba will be remembered fondly by those who cared for him and by guests who followed his story over the years.
