CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The Cape Warming Center will operate out of a new location this winter through a partnership with The Salvation Army of Cape Girardeau.

Cape Cares Inc., a newly formed nonprofit organization established by members of the Cape Warming Center team, announced that The Salvation Army will provide space at its facility for the 2026-27 winter season.

Under the agreement, The Salvation Army will provide the facility, while Cape Cares will oversee all warming center operations, including guest services, volunteer coordination, meals, policies and nightly operations.

“We are incredibly grateful to Major Brendon Robertson for welcoming this partnership and helping us find a home for the Warming Center,” said Amy Young, co-chair of Cape Cares. “Last season showed us what is possible when this community comes together. This partnership gives us the opportunity to build on that work and continue providing a safe, welcoming place for our neighbors during dangerously cold nights.”

Robertson said the partnership aligns with The Salvation Army’s mission to serve vulnerable members of the community during extreme weather.

Last winter, the Cape Warming Center operated at Grace United Methodist Church, serving more than 170 people with the help of over 400 community volunteers.

Since then, members of the warming center team have established Cape Cares as a nonprofit organization, which has received 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service.

Despite the change in location, the center will continue providing temporary overnight shelter for people during dangerously cold weather.

Cape Cares is seeking volunteers, community groups and organizations to help provide meals, supplies and financial support throughout the upcoming winter season.

Information about volunteering, donations and warming center operations is available at CapeWarmingCenter.org and on the Cape Warming Center‘s Facebook page.
