CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce joined Saxony Lutheran High School in celebrating the ribbon cutting of its new Agriculture Science and Multipurpose Building.
The new facility is designed to support hands-on learning and expand educational opportunities in agriculture, science and leadership development for students.
Administrators said the addition allows students to complete technical training without leaving school grounds — something they say was not previously possible.
“We felt like that we were shortchanging our kids, not having a space on campus that they could do the hands-on things that you need to do it in ag science program,” one school leader said. “And as you can see with the shop area, that gives them the opportunity to stay on campus and get the things that they need that will help them as they move forward after they leave Saxony.”
The building includes an eight-station welding shop and expanded workspace for agriculture-related coursework. Before the facility opened, students had to travel off campus for certain training opportunities.
“We’re going to have an eight-station welding shop,” the administrator said. “Previous to now, they had to go off campus to weld if they even got to do the hands-on weld.”
School leaders said the project was funded through a capital campaign that began in 2017. The campaign raised more than $2.2 million in donations, allowing the school to complete construction debt-free.
Officials said the building represents a significant investment in campus infrastructure and future-ready education.
“There’s a growing demand for that type of training for students coming out of high school,” the administrator said. “There’s a greater demand for that hands-on type of work. The two-year tech training, great demand for that. And we want to be able to provide that to help meet the labor demand for our country.”
Saxony Lutheran High School officials said the addition is expected to serve students for years to come.
