Scam alert: Fake calls targeting Southeast Missouri resident

DUNKLIN COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam targeting locals.

Scammers are calling and texting individuals, falsely claiming they have a “final notice” to pay Missouri Department of Revenue or traffic violation fines.

Residents are reminded that the Department of Revenue will never request payment over the phone or via text message.

To avoid falling victim to the scam:

— Do not respond to unsolicited calls or texts demanding money.
— Never pay bills or fees using gift cards.
— Verify any owed fees by contacting the Department of Revenue directly using official contact information.

Suspected scams can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
