Scam Alert: Impostors posing as Cape Girardeau County deputies

Law Enforcement Warns Of Phone Scam

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam in which impostors are posing as deputies or detectives.

The scammers claim that the victim owes money and threatens legal action unless payment is made immediately. In some cases, they use the names of real staff members to appear convincing.

The sheriff’s office emphasizes that it will never demand money over the phone or request payment through unconventional methods such as Bitcoin or gift cards.

Residents who receive such calls are advised not to provide personal information or send money. Instead, they should hang up and contact the sheriff’s office directly at (573) 243-3551 to verify any claims.
