Scammers are making fake arrest warrants to get people to pay out

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KBSI) – Scammers are making fake arrest warrants and urging people to pay out in order to avoid arrest.

McCracken County Sheriff Ryan Norman said the most prevalent scams he’s seen often deal potential victims receiving phone calls saying they missed a grand jury hearing and there’s a warrant for their arrest.

“A person that I talked to yesterday actually received a picture of an alleged arrest warrant out of district federal court,” Sheriff Norman said. “It was fake but that can make people think that it’s legit — where they’re getting a picture that looks like a legitimate document.”

The document “commands” the person to send money to avoid arrest. Sheriff Norman said you cannot pay off an arrest warrant, but he says another dead giveaway is the scammer giving the option for bitcoin payment.

Norman said if you receive a strange phone call that seems like a scam, don’t rush. You can hang up, say you’ll call them back. Then talk about it to someone you trust — get their thoughts. You can call law enforcement or talk to someone in person.
