Scott City fitness facility opens after facing setbacks with a bad contractor

SCOTT CITY, Mo. (KBSI) – Kopion Fitness opened in Scott City on Monday February 5, 2024.
Kopion is located in the old Bobs Food Liner building, the building was a grocery store for more than 50 years in Scott City.
Bobs Food Liner closed in late summer of 2022 and gym owner Alex Landewee purchased the building.
The 10,000 square foot fitness facility is now open, but Landewee says he faced a few challenges along the way.
“Took a long road to get here, had some hurdles and that kind of stuff, but we finally got open. We have had crazy support.”
One of the hurdles Landewee is referring to is an incident with a contractor, Hickman Construction, who was hired to work on the fitness facility, but the work never got done.
Blake Hickman owner of Hickman Construction was arrested by the Scott City Police Department and faces charges for scam jobs.
Although Hickman is accused of taking more than a hundred thousand dollars from the business Landewee says he’s not dwelling on the negative.
“We persevered and to be honest I try to put him in the back of my mind. We still pushed through it, and we got to the other side and we’ve got an amazing facility regardless with or without him.”
The gym was originally set to open in August but due to the issues with the contractor it was delayed until February.
Landewee says he’s received a great deal of support from the community and gym members.
The 24-hour gym offers a heavy lifting room, sauna, shower rooms, a childcare area and 12 classes a week with more to come.
Chelsea Held is a personal trainer at the gym.
“We have all the equipment necessary for strongman, lifestyle fitness, anything that you can imagine we’ve got it and personally I offer one on one training,” says Held.
Carla Marquart is a longtime Kopion member, and she says since becoming a member of Kopion Fitness she has fulfilled her weight loss goals and it’s been lifechanging, she says becoming a member of the gym was a great decision.
“You can’t go wrong; you can’t go wrong coming here!”
Kopion has two locations one in Advance and one in Scott City.
