Scott City resident reflects on memories of Bob’s Foodliner

SCOTT CITY, Mo. (KBSI) – For years, Bob’s Food Liner provided those who live in Scott City and the surrounding areas with a convenient place to get groceries.

And Darlene Carre, who has lived in Scott City for more than two decades, said since Bob’s closed, things just aren’t the same.

“It wasn’t just a grocery store,” Carre said.

Carre works as a library clerk at Riverside Regional Library. She remembers times when Bob’s would provide lunch for the day.

“Many a time, one of us would go over there and get a bag of chicken and bring it back and that would be lunch,” she said. “It was good.”

She said it was the go-to place for any groceries you may need, especially for people without a vehicle.

“If you’re in the middle of mixing something up, and you don’t have one of the things you need in there, then you’d jump in your car and run to Bob’s,” she said. “And for those people who live in this town and don’t even have a car, they can walk there.”

And with Bob’s and the library essentially sharing a parking lot, Carre said she and others at the library had a special relationship with the people at Bob’s.

“We knew pretty much everybody that worked in there, and you would come in and say, ‘hey, I got a book in for you,’” she said. “They were neighbors.”

Carre said Bob’s is and will continue to be missed.

“It was nice, and we all miss it,” she said. “I didn’t shop there every day or even every week, but I shopped there often enough that now that it’s not there, I miss it even more.”

The building won’t be vacant for long, as there are plans to repurpose it into a fitness gym.
