Scott County Sheriff shares resources for those affected by recent storms

SCOTT COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – The storm has passed but recovery will be long for some Scott County residents.
Scott County continues to pick up the pieces today after a horrific storm swept through the area Friday night May 16, 2025.
Scott County Sheriff Derick Wheetley shares resources in Scott County for those affected by the storm.
“Within minutes of the tornado striking the area we had MOdot, businesses with heavy equipment, tree trimming services all out to help that night. Mainly to help access the patients” says Wheetley. “Throughout that time since it has continued on and Missouri Red Cross is set up at the Minor Convention Center helping any families in need and also welcoming any volunteers or supplies.”
According to the Red Cross you do not need any proof of identification to utilize their resources.
Just be a storm victim and show up.
Wheetley shares that he estimates at least 50 families have been affected in the Scott County area.
“Sloanville took the biggest hit and County Road 524 which is all within probably a 10 mile stretch so probably 50 homes affected with most of them being total losses.”
Sheriff Wheetley says they strongly encourage citizens to utilize verifiable resources such as Red Cross and Emergency Management instead of independent contractors or people you don’t know for help.
“I have an obligation to account for everybody and there still is dangers out there so we are encouraging everybody to go through the red cross or EMA director, and they will coordinate that” says Wheetley.
Two lives were tragically lost, and several others were sent to the hospital on Friday evening, and dozens have no home to go back to in Scott County.
“They can reach out to the Red Cross which is setup at the Minor Convention Center. Also, our EMA Director he can be reached using his cell phone which is 573-380-2728 and his name is Jon. He’s helping coordinate some of the efforts between the Red Cross and the needs of the county and also SEMA’s been in contact and have people down. We’re waiting to see the total for the states to see if we will be declared as an emergency” says Wheetley.
Wheetley says that they do ask if you don’t directly live in the areas that were affected in Scott County to please stay away from the area as they continue cleanup efforts.
The Red Cross is accepting financial donations and volunteers. You can find more information here.
