Scott County voters vote NO on 2 questions on ballot for special election

SCOTT COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – Voters in Scott County weighed in on two questions on the ballot Tuesday, November 7 in a special election.
Voters did not approve a sales tax of one-half of one percent providing for the general revenues and roads and bridges of the county.
Yes – 807
No – 904
“We are here to talk about the half cent sales tax initiative,” Presiding Commissioner Danny Tetley said that Scott County is looking to increase its revenue. “Just to increase the revenues of the county so that we can take care of the infrastructure that we need to take care of.”
Tetley says the county is in need of road work, reconstructed bridges, reconstruction of the county court house and an increased salary for county employees.
County Clerk Allen Seabaugh says that local elections like this one, don’t always see the hype like presidential ones do, and almost have more of an impact.
“So typical with an off-year election, a special election, the turnout is slow,” said Seabaugh. “We see that in an August or November off year.”
Voters in Sikeston did not approve to provide retail opportunities.
In order to provide retail opportunities that are equal to cities with a population in excess of 19,500 inhabitants and in order to promote retail growth and in order to provide equal opportunities for businesses that do not have a liquor license connected with food or other retail sales, shall intoxicating liquor, containing alcohol in excess of five percent (5%) by weight, be sold by the drink at retail for consumption on the premises where sold?
