SEMO Athletics: Redhawks win over Southern Indiana

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI)- Southeast Missouri (10-6, 5-0 OVC) earned at least a share of the 2024 Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title with a 6-1 victory over Southern Indiana (7-9, 3-1) Friday afternoon at the John C. Bierk Tennis Complex.

SEMO handed USI its first conference loss of the season and remains the only unbeaten team in the OVC with one match remaining this regular season.

For the first time in program history, the Redhawks are back-to-back OVC Regular-Season Champions. Overall, it’s SEMO’s third regular-season crown (2021, 2023, 2024).

SEMO, the OVC Regular-Season Champion in three of the last four years, took control from the beginning and never let up.

Trinity Calinescu and Vivian Lai defeated Lauren Rowe and Madison Windham, 6-1, and Daniela Hlacikova and Juliette Talieu beat Sofia Davidoff and Antonia Ferrarini, 6-4, to win the doubles point.

The Redhawks were victorious in five of the six singles matches. Hlacikova took care of Rowe, 6-0, 6-4, at the top spot in the lineup. Calinescu cruised to a 6-2, 6-0, win over McCorkle at No. 2.

Vivian Lai defeated Ferrarini, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 position and Valeeva beat Davidoff, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 5. Juliette Demunck picked up SEMO’s final singles win with a 7-5, 6-2, victory in No. 6.

SEMO improved to 27-3 on its home courts since the 2019 campaign. Since 2021, the Redhawks have gone 23-2 in regular-season OVC matches.

The Redhawks conclude their regular-season at Eastern Illinois on Apr. 10.
