SEMO Athletics to induct 6 into 2023 Hall of Fame

Rick Source SEMO AthleticsRick Wieser was the starting quarterback at Southeast Missouri for both the 1974 and 1975 seasons after transferring to SEMO from Fort Scott Community College. Wieser was the MIAA's Most Valuable Player and earned First-Team All-MIAA honors in 1975. He quarterbacked the 1975 team to an undefeated record in conference play. The 1975 squad, which won the MIAA title, was SEMO's first team in program history to go undefeated in conference play. Wieser won the Vogelsang Most Valuable Player Award on the gridiron, as well. He also played one season of baseball at SEMO in 1976. The then-Indians finished third in the College World Series that year. Wieser is in the SEMO Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of that baseball team. He serves as the color analyst for SEMO's football radio broadcasts. Michelle Summers was a three-time First-Team All-OVC selection (2005, 2007, 2008) as an infielder on the SEMO softball team. Summers is the softball program's all-time career leader in doubles (47), at-bats (670), runs scored (161), RBI (132), home runs (48) and total bases (423). She is 10th among career leaders in batting average (.340), third in slugging percentage (.631), fourth in on-base percentage (.427), second in hits (228), third in walks (80), second in hit by pitch (24), fourth in games played (208) and third in games started (208). Ryan Spille rates as one of the top pitchers to ever take the mound at SEMO. Spille was First-Team All-OVC, the OVC Pitcher of the Year and a Third-Team Collegiate Baseball All-American during the 1998 season, the year the Redhawks won their first-ever OVC Tournament title and advanced to their first NCAA Division I Tournament. He was named a Preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball the following season. Spille ranks among SEMO's career pitching leaders in wins (21, 5th), strikeouts (215, 2nd), strikeouts per nine innings (9.07, 8th), innings pitched (213.1, 9th), shutouts (3, t2nd) and complete games (16, 3rd). He also ranks on several single-season record lists. Spille was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 19th round of the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft. Blake Smith Source SEMO AthleticsA native of nearby Jackson, Blake Smith enjoyed a highly decorated career as a member of SEMO's track and field program. Smith was a three-time All-American and earned the 2014 OVC Indoor Championships MVP honor. He was part of one OVC outdoor title (2014) and two OVC indoor crowns (2014, 2015) with the Redhawks. Smith won OVC Championships in the indoor 55-Meter/60-Yard Dash (2014), indoor High Jump (2014), indoor 60-Meter Dash (2015) and outdoor 100-Meter/100-Yard Dash (2015). His 6.65 mark in the 60-Meter Dash is an all-time OVC record. Smith also broke school records in the 55m and 100m events and earned SEMO Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Male Athlete of the Year accolades twice. After his stellar college career, Smith finished fifth in the USA and ranked seventh in the world 60m in 2018. He placed in the top-eight times in the 50m and top-20 times ever run in the 60m. Smith earned a Silver medal at the Penn Relays for Team USA in the 4x100 in 2018 and claimed a Gold medal at the Mount Sac Relays for Team USA in the 4x100 that same year. Lori Chase earned All-OVC honors during all four of her seasons at SEMO. Chase earned OVC All-Newcomer accolades as a freshman (1999-00) and was a First-Team All-OVC pick as a sophomore (2000-01). She finished her outstanding career claiming Second-Team All-OVC laurels as both a junior (2001-02) and senior (2002-03). Chase scored 1,501 points, third-most all-time among the school's career leaders and second-most in the program's NCAA Division I era. She also ranks among the school's all-time single-season leaders in several categories. Chase made a single-game school record 25 free throws vs. Tennessee State on Feb. 3, 2001, and was named an OVC Legend in 2019. An All-American and the 2001 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, second baseman Clemente Bonilla led the nation and broke SEMO's all-time career record in walks that season. Bonilla was a First-Team All-OVC honoree in 2001 and a second-team selection in 2002. He ranked among his program's career leaders in at-bats (t8th, 686), runs (5th, 172), hits (10th, 212), doubles (t4th, 59), walks (1st, 207), on-base percentage (4th, .472) and stolen bases (t10th, 34). Bonilla signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cincinnati Reds where he reached the AA ranks. He also played in the Baltimore Orioles organization. CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Southeast Missouri State Athletics will induct six into the 2023 Hall of Fame Class.
The inductees include Clemente Bonilla (baseball), Lori Chase (women’s basketball), Blake Smith (track & field), Ryan Spille (baseball), Michelle Summers (softball) and Rick Wieser (football, baseball).
This year’s induction will be Friday, Feb. 2 at the Show Me Center.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the dinner and program following at 6:30 p.m.
The cost is $50 for adults and $20 for youth 12 and under. Tables of eight can be purchased for $350 apiece. All Hall of Fame reservations include a ticket for the SEMO basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 3.
