SEMO Board of Governors approves $158.4 Million balanced budget
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Southeast Missouri State University’s Board of Governors has approved a balanced $158.4 million operating budget for Fiscal Year 2026, helping reinforce the schools commitment to affordable, high-quality education and investment in their students and staff.
The new budget, which takes effect July 1, includes a 3.1% average increase in undergraduate tuition and fees, a 3.3% increase in room and board, and an anticipated $1.6 million rise in state operating appropriations, bringing SEMO’s state support total to $55.2 million.
“Our budget reflects SEMO’s ongoing focus on student access, academic quality and operational sustainability,” said Diana Harley, interim vice president of Finance and Administration. “We are making smart investments in our people, programs and infrastructure to ensure long-term strength and student impact.”
The budget also raises wages, including a $10.50 per hour minimum for student workers and $15 per hour for full-time employees.
Students say they’re already feeling the difference.
“Compared to other colleges, I’ve noticed this is more affordable, by semester or even by per year,” said one SEMO student. “That’s why I came here, because it’s more affordable and just the different scholarship options as well.”
Another student added, “You’re able to apply (scholarships) so that it’s helpful. The Pell Grant definitely helps pay for my classes and then scholarships as well.”
Some say on campus employment is crucial.
“Yeah, I actually work as a leader, an orientation leader, so I know what it’s like to work for the campus and help get money that way,” said one student. “And I know other students, like international students and others who just need a little bit more financial help.”
A student employee at the SEMO Recreation Center explained how her job is making college more manageable financially.
“I just pay my rent with it and for SEMO classes. I just paid my summer class fees through the Rec because I get 40 hours there. So it’s not much, but it’s really helping.”
“SEMO delivers academic excellence, a regional economic impact, and a student-centered environment because of the contributions of the faculty, staff and students who work here,” said SEMO President Dr. Carlos Vargas.
As the new fiscal year approaches, students are encouraging others to consider SEMO.
“Apply here. They are always willing to help you and make it work, whether it just be a payment plan or through great financial advisors. They’re always willing to help.”
