SEMO Food Bank announces winners of ‘Food Bank Challenge’

MISSOURI(KBSI) – Two area banks are reigning champions!

Sterling Bank of Poplar Bluff and Southern Bank of Cape Girardeau-Jackson are being recognized for being the winners of the Southeast Missouri ‘Food Bank Challenge’.

The challenge involved eight banks in Poplar Bluff who competed for the full month and in Cape County five banks who competed for a two-week period.

 In total, more than 6,500 food items were collected and $4,054 was donated to help families facing hunger.

During the competition, each unit of food and every $1 equaled one point.

Southern Bank came in the lead claiming the championship with 771 points.

Sterling Bank claimed the Poplar Bluff championship with 4,027 points.

Southern Bank, with 771, was the top bank in the Cape-Jackson competition.

No person, child, or family should experience hunger, yet Missouri ranks in the top 20 for highest food insecurity rates in the US.

Southeast Missouri Food Bank serves about 80,000 individuals each month across its 16-county service area.

Southeast Missouri has some of the highest rates of hunger in the state with seven of the 10 most food insecure counties in Missouri.

These champions are fighting hunger one donation at a time and proving that donation efforts can make a difference in your community.

Other banks that competed in the Food Bank Challenge are The Bank of MissouriFirst Midwest BankFirst State Community Bank and Montgomery Bank in Cape County and The Bank of Missouri, First Midwest Bank, First Missouri State Bank, Ozark Federal Credit Union, People’s Community State Bank, Southern Bank and U.S. Bank in Poplar Bluff.
