SEMO Football & SEMO Food Bank launch fourth Sack Hunger Campaign
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Southeast Missouri State University’s football team will again partner with the Southeast Missouri Food Bank for its fourth annual Sack Hunger campaign during the 2025 season.
The initiative converts defensive sacks on the field into meals for families in need across the region. For every sack by the Redhawks defense, Coalter Insurance, First Midwest Bank, Midwest Sterilization Corp. and the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo will each donate $100 to the food bank. Each sack helps provide about 1,600 meals.
Last season, the Redhawks defense recorded 30 sacks, raising $15,000 for hunger relief.
“We are proud to team up with Southeast Missouri Food Bank and our generous sponsors for the Sack Hunger campaign again this year,” said Nate Saverino, SEMO’s senior associate athletic director for external operations. “Football fans love to see a big defensive play and knowing that each sack will help feed families makes it even more special.”
Food bank president and CEO Joey Keys said the effort is an example of teamwork beyond the field. “Every sack is more than just a statistic; it means more meals for neighbors who might otherwise go without,” Keys said.
The food bank will host a Sack Hunger tailgate before SEMO’s home opener against North Alabama on Sept. 6. Fans purchasing tickets through gofevo.com
will also contribute directly, with $5.73 from each ticket going to the food bank.
The Southeast Missouri Food Bank serves 16 counties through more than 140 programs, including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, mobile distributions, senior food boxes and student backpack programs. More information is available at SEMOFoodBank.org.
