SEMO Law Enforcement Academy gets $1.5 million renovation
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Southeast Missouri State University’s Law Enforcement Academy will undergo a $1.5 million renovation, funded in part by a U.S. Department of Justice grant.
The project will add 3,000 square feet of space, simulation environments for training, and a defensive tactics area.
The renovation will enhance training capabilities and underscore the university’s commitment to public safety.
Since its founding in 1987, the academy has trained over 3,000 officers, many serving in southeast Missouri departments.
The upgrades will include modern law enforcement training tools, expanded parking and updated landscaping.
“This investment allows us to train future officers in environments that reflect the complex realities they’ll face in the field,” said Dr. Richard Flotron, SEMO director of public safety.
The project marks a new era of collaboration between the academy, the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Criminal Justice.
SEMO is also launching a streamlined admissions pathway for law enforcement certification seekers.
