SEMO names new Director of Public Safety

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Southeast Missouri State University named a new Director of Public Safety.

Richard D. Flotron III, Ed.D. is the new Director of Public Safety effective August 1.

Flotron was selected after a comprehensive national search. He currently works in Hillsboro, Missouri, as deputy sheriff at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Flotron to the University community,” said Dr. Carlos Vargas, SEMO President. “His extensive experience in public safety, law enforcement training, and academic leadership will be invaluable as we continue to enhance the safety and well-being of our campus community.”

SEMO’s Department of Public Safety includes the campus police, parking and transit, and emergency response.

Flotron brings more than two decades of experience in law enforcement and public safety. He served in various leadership roles, including executive director of Public Safety and associate dean of students at Mineral Area College, where he oversaw campus safety operations, Title IX investigations, and the development of emergency response plans.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to come home to my alma mater,” said Flotron. “I look forward to working with the entire SEMO community, especially our students.”

Flotron holds an Ed.D. in higher education leadership from Missouri Baptist University. He has a Master of Science in criminal justice administration from Lindenwood University, and a Bachelor of Science in clinical psychology from Southeast Missouri State University.
