SEMO Quarterback Paxton DeLaurent Sets Two School Records in 34-3 Win Over Tennesse Tech
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Southeast Missouri State University quarterback Paxton DeLaurent made history in the Redhawks 34-3 victory over Tennessee Tech, setting two school records. DeLaurent became SEMO’s all-time leader in both passing touchdowns and passing yards during Saturday’s win, a milestone he shared with family and teammates.
Reflecting on his record-breaking day, DeLaurent tells us he was frustrated with his performance, but thankful for the moment.
“I didn’t get to enjoy it as much in the moment as I would have liked,” DeLaurent said. “After two interceptions, I was frustrated and just focused on winning. But afterward, my family was here, and we got to celebrate together. That was a great moment.”
DeLaurent surpassed 6,503 passing yards and 50 touchdowns here in his senior season, both now in the record books for the Redhawks. However, the standout quarterback credited his success to the support of his teammates, including this seasons receiving core which he has was written off by many.
“It’s awesome, especially with this receiving crew,” DeLaurent said. “They were told they might not be the big-name guys we’ve had before, but for us to have the best passing statistical season, I think they take a lot of pride in that. They’ve got a chip on their shoulder, and it feels really good for them too.”
SEMO head coach Tom Matukewicz praised DeLaurent’s growth, especially his leadership in addition to his physical talents.
“We’re so thankful for him,” Matukewicz said. “He’s a great talent, but his leadership has really improved, and that’s been awesome to see.”
Wide receiver Tristan Smith, who caught Paxton DeLaurent’s 50th touchdown that set the record, commented on the quarterback’s work ethic.
“I know how hard he works,” Smith said. “He’s always calling us over to watch film and work with him. I promise this won’t be the last time we see something like this from him.”
While these records were goals DeLaurent set for himself before the season, his focus has already shifted to next week.
DeLaurent and the Redhawks will look to continue their momentum this week as they prepare to face Charleston Southern on the road.
