SEMO starting Center Zack Gieg has his Senior year cut short due to injury

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Southeast Missouri State University senior center Zach Gieg’s football career was cut short following a severe knee injury, his final season as the Redhawks’ center.

Gieg, who has spent over a decade on the field, announced his decision to step away from football in a heartfelt social media post Thursday morning. “Football, my first true love, thank you for everything you’ve given me and everything you’ve taught me over the last decade. It is time to move on and start the new journey,” Gieg wrote, thanking those who helped him get to where he is today.

SEMO head coach Tom Matukewicz shared his thoughts on the impact of losing Gieg for the season.

“All those injuries are tough,” Matukewicz said. “At the end of the day, tough times don’t last, tough people do. He’ll be there to cheer us on, and we’ll need his leadership to continue.”

Gieg’s influence on the team stretches beyond his All-American talent, particularly his leadership. Freshman offensive lineman Zane Coon reflected on the role Gieg played in bringing the team together.

“Zach has been around a long time, and naturally, he’s a leader. He really held us together,” Coon said. “Obviously, he’s a great player, but his leadership was key.”

Coon also shared how Gieg took on a mentor role, helping him transition into college football. “I graduated high school last December and came here in January, so being young around these older guys was tough,” Coon said. “Gieg was like a big brother. He taught me a lot, especially since it was my first time playing center.”

SEMO quarterback Paxton DeLaurent is expected to transition smoothly with Sixkiller snapping the ball, according to Matukewicz.

The Redhawks now turn their focus to Saturday’s matchup against conference rival Tennessee Tech. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Houck Field in Cape Girardeau.
