Sesser withdraws proposal to provide police services to nearby communities

SESSER, Ill., (KBSI) — The city of Sesser has withdrawn a proposal to provide law enforcement services to surrounding communities following feedback received during discussions.

In a Sept. 29 letter to the village of Valier, Sesser Mayor Jason Ashmore said the decision reflected concerns expressed during the process. Valier Mayor George Dudzinski shared the letter on Facebook.

“After listening to the feedback throughout this process, we believe the appropriate decision is to withdraw the proposal and respect the wishes that have been expressed,” Ashmore wrote.

Ashmore said city officials remained confident in the Sesser Police Department’s ability to provide the services but believed an agreement should have the support of the community it would serve.

The letter did not detail the proposal’s costs, staffing or specific concerns raised.

Ashmore said the withdrawal was not a reflection on the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. Sesser will continue its mutual aid relationships with the sheriff’s department and Valier, providing assistance when requested, particularly during emergencies.
